When The Shit Hits The Fan, It Pours
And I realize I’m blending idioms, or euphamisms, or whatever the hell you’d call those sayings (anyone? anyone?). I tried to wikipedia it, but I got so confused after about the third sentence that I gave up.
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that this has been a LONG week. The fact that I was exhausted (and maybe still hungover?) from being in San Francisco didn’t help, and it was just one thing after another ALL. WEEK. LONG. Both good & bad.
First let me start by saying THANK YOU to everyone who gave me a big virtual hug in regards to my post on Zach and his apparent eye problems. There were a lot of tears this week, and a good bit of them were caused by your outpouring of support. I love me some internets and you guys gave me great perspective.
We went to the Pediatric Ophthalmologist on Thursday morning, and he basically confirmed what the Optometrist had told us on Tuesday. So, on Monday we’re heading over to an optical shop to pick out some nifty frames for baby Zach. While the vain, superficial part of me wants to get him some cute little wire frames, the practical side of me, which is usually NOT very persuasive, realizes that I need to get him some sturdy (read: hard to break) plastic frames. That look something like this:
So, until I’m comfortable enough to think that he won’t pull them off constantly, he’ll look something like this:
Which is much cuter and easier to deal with than what I was thinking he’d look like earlier in the week. If you remember. And while it still kills me everytime I think of covering up his beautiful blue eyes with glasses, especially of the uber thick, coke bottle variety lenses, I realize that it’s really what’s best for him. Especially as his crossed eyes (or accomodative esotropia) seems to be getting worse as the week has progressed. Glasses will completely correct that situation. And let me tell you, it’s pretty pathetic. Pretty freakin’ pathetic.
On top of all this, my computer crashed (NOT the one I won at BlogHer, which I’m typing on right now) so I haven’t had much access to email or pictures, or any of the information I had stored for the Great AllMediocre Giveaway of ‘08. I don’t know if anyone has asked to be added to AM, or if anyone has emailed me at that address. I can get, but not send, emails on my amomtwoboys account, so that’s something. If you’ve emailed me and I haven’t responded, please don’t hold it against me. If you’ve asked to be added to AM and haven’t been, don’t hold that against me either. Nerds to the Rescue are supposed to come to my rescue on Monday and hopefully I’ll be back up and running. In the meantime, if any of you can give me a lesson on setting up Outlook on two computers without totally fucking it up, I’d greatly appreciate it.
AND, I have a RAGING sinus-y cold. I’m not sure which one of you BlogHer bitches gave it to me, but if I ever figure it out I’m going to hunt you down and…I’m not sure what. But it’s going to be BAD and you should be AFRAID. Very afraid. My nose is running, and completely stuffed at the same time, my eyes are watering, my head is stuffy…it’s very unpleasant. And makes me very crabby. And OH SO tired. So very tired.
On a good note, we got Dylan & Zach’s swingset finished today, which has produced MANY an excited giggle and shriek of joy from Dylan. So that’s been fun. I’d share photos and videos with you, but I don’t have this computer set up for that and frankly, I don’t feel like spending the time doing it. I know you’re crushed.
I also got to make real life hang out plans with two of my new favorite people. I’m sure you’re sick of hearing about them, which is stupid because they’re AWESOME, so I won’t tell you who it is…I’lljusttypethatit’stheSpohrsreallyfastandthenyouwon’tcare. And I know you’re totally freakin’ jealous. Bwah ha ha ha ha!
And! We “won” a trip to Disneyland! All we have to do to claim our “winnings” is attend an hour and a half long presentation. For a timeshare. It’s really AMAZING how lucky we are, isn’t it? But we’re totally going to do it, because HELLO, free trip to DISNEYLAND! How fun is that?
Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support this week. I really can’t even begin to tell you how much it’s meant to me. And you can bet your little asses that I’ll put a picture up as soon as Zach’s got his glasses.

Good luck picking out glasses! I got wire frames for Caroline the first go-round, and she looked adorable, but eventually decided they were uncomfortable and threw them off so many times they died an untimely death. I had the most luck with Fisher Price brand, teddy bear design frames. http://www.bestbuyeyeglasses.com/fisher-price-teddy-bear/100808.html Those longer earpieces really help keep them on. And she gets lots of compliments on how cute they are. And definitely ask the glasses person if they can make the lenses thinner. They really should be able to. Good luck! I know it’s no fun. {{{hugs}}} But Zach is going to be absolutely adorable in whatever you pick.

You should be able to set up Outlook on two computers without any problem — you’re probably using either a POP3 or an IMAP connection; the difference being that with POP3, the emails you check on one Outlook will likely remain unread on the other computer, but with IMAP you can check on either and it will be updated. Gmail has an IMAP option, so if you happen to use that, I know it works that way.
Oh, and I had glasses when I was two
Since the plastic frames were relatively cheap, my mom got me two pairs, two different colors. It served two purposes; when I “accidentally” broke one pair, there was another, and I also would wear them more often because I got to “choose” which ones to wear. When you pick them up, do yourself a favor and get an eyeglass repair kit. They’re usually less than $10 and worth it to have on hand. I’m glad I got glasses - still wear them now - since the alternative was that I would have been blind by 2 1/2! My optometrist didn’t catch it, sadly - but my mom and my pediatrician did, good thing we got a second opinion - you totally did the right thing!
Oh, and we also did a timeshare session thing - it’s harder than you’d think to get out of there in an hour and a half, so keep an eye on the time (bring your own watch, they so don’t give you clocks) and have a ready excuse or firm NO THANK YOU. It takes about 15 minutes to even get out, since once you refuse they send out the manager, and then you have to sign out and even that guy offers you another deal. Don’t worry about being tempted though… even the last ditch efforts are pretty damn ridiculous!

Boy, that free laptop really came in handy, didn’t it?
And YES, of course I’m jealous! Lucky BI-OTCH!
Also, do his plastic frames have to be a bright color? That’s the part would bug ME, if he had to look like he was wearing a rainbow on his face.
And lastly… perfectly healthy over here, so you won’t have to maim me when next we meet!

Well, there’s one good thing about missing the conference, I did not give anyone any nasty illnesses and I have been known to be a spreader. It’s the kids, not me.
Also, I think Zach is going to be adorable in glasses.

I can’t wait to see pictures of that cutie! He will be adorable with whatever he has on, I guarantee it.
I never heard the scoop on winning the lap top, but that is awesome!
It’s been a tough week for me, too. I feel like I’m still tired from last weekend - which I loved, but then needed some days to unwind. With a 3 and 4 year old. Ha!
Feel better, Meghan! It was probably that CRANK ASS cocktail waitress spreading all the germs… And thank you again for buying me a most delightful JD & Coke!

maybe the frames will accentuate his gorgeous blue eyes?? i can’t wait to see pictures!
that’s the good thing about inheriting an illness at a blogging conference. you can just go through everyone’s blog that you met and see who is discussing being sick or having sick kids. that will narrow it down for sure…

Sorry to hear about the cold and the computer. Hopefully the nerds can help. I am still trying to recover stuff off my old hard drive so I can get it replaced and be back on my mac instead of the replacement PC.

Zach’s always going to be a total cutie, no matter what. And with his glasses, he’ll convince everyone he is so “deep” and “intellectual” and he’ll have even MORE little girls falling in love with him, if that’s even possible. Watch out, you’ve got a mini-player on your hands!!!
As for the rest of it… Um, it’s Sunday! New week! Better week! No sinus stuff, no computer hassles, no bad stuff AT ALL allowed this week - right? Right.

Hope you feeling better soon. My husband has the same affliction and is about to get on an airplane.

Hi! Our daughter had to get glasses when she was 2, and it was a huge pain to get her to wear them. I asked the optometrist how I was supposed to get a 2YO to wear glasses. She said the same thing you do to get a 2YO to do anything. Not helpful.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know we went with big honkin’ plastic uglies the first time, and learned better. They get twisted out of shape and banged up really easily. Next time, we got those flexible wire rim ones for kids. I would check into them. The lens will still be covered with scratches like three seconds after your kid puts glasses on, but the frames will last a while.
As far as getting your little one to wear them, that is hard. The best thing I can say is consistently insist on it no matter how he reacts. AND try distracting when you put them on. And ask people to NOT point out the glasses, because that usually leads immediately to their removal. I don’t know how many people I wanted to smack upside the head when I finally had my daughter leaving her glasses on and said annoying person would make a comment about the glasses and remind her.

Where’s the love, Headless Mom? You can come party with us, too!!!
My son in law is adorable and perfect no matter which pair of glasses he wears - but dude, wouldn’t he be freaking GORGEOUS in some wire frames like the kid from “Jerry Maguire?” Can you tell I’m trying to appeal to the vain, superficial side of you?

Dang. that is a busy week!
When are you going to Disneyworld? We’re making the pilgrimage in October. Not planning to tell the kids until probably the week before because I don’t think I could take two months of hearing “whenarewegoing? whenarewegoing? whenarewegoing?”
Just don’t get sucked into the time share.
