The End of an Era
I’m going to admit something right now. Some of you might not like it. Some of you *DJ* might make fun of me.
I cried the other night as I watched the last game being played at Yankee Stadium.
I wasn’t sobbing, but there was definitely a tear or two running down my cheek. It was emotional. That’s the stadium that holds my memories of being a kid and going to baseball games. That’s the stadium that was home to my favorite baseball player, Bernie Williams, for his entire career.
He hadn’t been back in two years. I’ll never get to go back. And that made me sad.
But the new stadium has a Martini Bar, so that makes it a bit easier to handle.

On another end of an era type note, Zach is so close to walking it’s scary. He even took a few steps yesterday, between the ottoman & chair at Grandma Pam’s house. It was impressive, save for the fact that I think it was merely coincidental that he picked his feet up. Time will tell.
And given the fact that I’m leaving in a few days for a week, there is NO DOUBT in my mind that he’ll start walking while I’m gone. It’ll be a big “F-You for leaving me Mom!” moment.
I wonder if he’ll learn to give the finger at the same time?

Awwww mama, I feel your angst. I was sure, back before the Little Imp started walking (she ended up being a late walker anyhow despite my fears and concerns) that the one weekend I couldn’t get out of not being there every single moment would be the one where she’d take those first few steps. It didn’t happen but it sure didn’t stop me from obsessing about it.
Go ahead and cry those tears. I can’t think of many of us out here who are gonna laugh.
*hugs*

Gavin said his first word when I was at work.
Gavin took his first steps when he was with my folks for a few days while I was on bedrest after a few fertility treatments.
Grant learned to ride a two wheeler when I was away on a retreat weekend.
I could go on and on, but you know what? It was pretty cool for those other people to live through THOSE firsts becasue I got to live through a bunch, too.

I didn’t watch the game, probably because I’m not a huge Yankee fan. I did see a game there, once, though. I think that’s enough for me. I wanted to actually get out to NY to see a game at Shea this year, even though it’s probably the worst stadium in the league (the honor of which will now transfer to New Comiskey, the last of the behemoth stadiums).
I’m sad Yankee Stadium will be gone. It was a beautiful park.

I would sob if they ever closed Dodger stadium, so I know how you feel. Amazing memories. And the martini bar…Tres New York!
I am willing him not to take a single step while you are away. Or to hurry on up and get walking while you’re home!

Get out your runnin’ shoes, mom. You’re going to be chasing that boy soon enough.
Here’s to hoping he puts it off a couple more weeks (clinking martini glass. So what if it’s 12:30 in the afternoon?).

I know what you mean Meghan. Between this and some of the rides at Coney Island going away I feel like part of my childhood is disappearing.
Isn’t that how it always works with his though? Both my boys spent a weekend with Nana and were walking by the end of it….

Do you seriously think that when Zach talks he’ll say “F you” and not “fuck you?” C’mon.

Well, I taught him how to give the finger the other day, so I’m sure he will give it to you. If he doesn’t, I’m not a very good teacher.

Moose hunter on your header? Niiiice.
I feel sad about Yankee Stadium, too.
And Zach might wait. Or start right before you leave. I’m throwing in some optimism here.

My husband will probably cry when Texas Stadium closes next year. Although they may be tears of joy since the new stadium is down the street…

Martini bars are good… Life has a way of balancing things out.
Don’t worry about Zach, just tell whoever is watching him (Grandma?) NOT to tell you if he walks. They must act as if the first time he walks in front of you is the very first time. They OWE you that much. Have a great time in NYC. Say hi for me.

This Boston Girl totally skimmed the ode to Yankee Stadium bullshit, although I tuned in to Martini Bar. When they tore down the old Boston Garden (Gaah-din) I was really sad too – until I found out the new one served margaritas. Margaritas and hockey – how can that end badly?
And HRH said his first word – Mama – while I was in Texas. Andy really debated even telling me.

I was wondering if the new stadium is going to have the big baseball bat out front, because if it didn’t that would be sac-relig!

I am not a Yankee fan, but I was there once as a kid and I respect the tradition and history, so I’m sorry to see it go, too. The fact that the team was eliminated from playoff contention for the season? Not so sorry.
As for Zach, try to look at it this way: Someone else will get the joy of walking around behind him, making sure he doesn’t smack his head, and thereby getting a sore back, for a few days. By the time you return, you can be the relief team!
But seriously, I think what Angie said captures it all and so many moms deal with the same dilemmas. At least you’re in good company.

My father-in-law, who grew up in NYC and saw hundreds of games there, was also emotional about that game and the ceremonies. And we had to tell my mother-in-law to STOP making fun of him for getting emotional about it.
Poor guy, and poor fans.
