Life Decisions
I just made a phone call that left me shaky and nervous and feeling generally kerfluffled.
I’m having my Mirena removed on October 6th.
Not because I’m going to try to get pregnant (I promise, honey!).
But because I’m pretty sure it’s making me CRAZY IN THE HEAD.
And, as we’ve discussed before, pretty “blah” in general.
So, the little sucker is going to get yanked out (OUCH!) and I’m going to cross my fingers that all the side effects I’ve read about are real and are causing my issues. Because if I go through the next few months without Mirena as ridiculously hormonal, bitchy and uncomfortable as I’ve been lately WITH it, SOMEONE IS GOING TO HAVE SOME EXPLAINING TO DO.
Keep your fingers crossed for me, please!
Oh, and send wine.

Fingers crossed. It’s a good possibility. When I went to my PCP about the Mirena, she said for me to try every birth control out there first before considering it because of the potential side effects. Good Luck!

I am personally SO afraid of birth control. My family has had horrible reactions to it. I don’t and will not take it. I support your decision for better health. (and I would gladly drink to that)

Best of luck! My Dr refused to give me Mirena due to the side effects, so I now sport the traditional copper IUD. No hormones, no side effects. Maybe that might be an option for you to consider.

I had the copper one too, only I got pregnant 7 months after it was put in! And yes, it was still in correctly and had to be removed to try and save the pregnancy. The result, the 2 year old angel sitting next to me right now! So, I wouldn’t change a thing cuz she is an angel (oh shit, she has my keys right now though, better watch her!), but it definitely can still let you get pregnant! AND, it DID NOT hurt not one teeny bit coming out (like I thought it would!)!!!! Good luck in whatever you go with!!

I just read your blog re: Mirena. And my heart stopped.
After spending years in the medical/surgical profession, standing in operating rooms and watching countless hours of surgery, reading medical books, developing training and marketing materials to a global audience, and generally being immersed in operative procedures, I was dumbfounded as I read you were having your Mirena removed.
Sure, I was slightly taken aback by the fact Mirena was capitalized (like, really, who would capitalize ‘colon’ or ‘appendix’?) but I assumed it was because you were giving this organ the deep respect it deserved, and I was stunned to realize (like I felt when Pluto was busted down to dwarf planet) there was an organ in my daughter’s body I DIDN’T KNOW EXISTED.
Now, when people ask me how the kids are doing, I’ll have to blurt out, “Everyone’s fine, except for Meghan, who unfortunately has to have her Mirena removed. I believe she’s searching for a suitable recipient, at least. Such a thoughtful girl.”
As tears dripped from the end of my nose I managed a quick Google search on the Internet machine and came face-to-face with the truth. Of course I was instantly relieved by the news, but then overcome with a deep sense of idiocy: “Well done, dumb ass. You thought the Mirena was an organ??? Sheesh. What next? Will you recommend The Macarena as an appropriate side dish for pot roast?”
I’m hopeful your Mirenaectomy is quick, painless and leads to an instant return to your prior happy self. As for me, I promise to start paying closer attention to ads for ‘feminine products’, so if and when I see a headline that reads, “I’m Having My NuvaRing Adjusted”, I’ll know it has nothing to do with some attachment someone’s added to their wedding band. That will be good for both of us.
Love ya!!

SO, now I’m thinking that maybe it’s not the Mirena that’s making me crazy in the head.
I think it’s genetic.

Wow. I had no idea something like that could cause crazy side effects. Huh. Where the hell have I been.
I hate all birth control, in general. It makes you feel like shit, and I think it’s effectiveness is HIGHLY over rated.
That would be why I told Bil if he ever wanted to even sleep in the same bed as me again, he’d go have that nice little ’snip, snip’ procedure done.

I think I have posted re this before, but I just had my mirena removed about 2 months ago for the following list of problems, severe abdominal pain, cramping & swelling, (couldn’t even touch my stomach to the counter, pick up daughter etc) baaad PMS symptoms, etc. I was told by an ER Dr and my new Gyno that it was for sure what was causing my problems. So, I had it removed and got on normal birth control. It’s been 2 months, and I am 100% better. I hope that this same thing occurs to you. After I had it removed I did research, and little do you know, they are very likely to be pulling it very soon due to these very side effects. I wish you the best of luck.
ps.. Take some motrin or some kind of pain reliever before you go to help with the slight cramping afterwards.

less irritability, more you-know-what drive (made husband happier), i yelled considerably less at my kids … it was crazy what i can only assume that was doing to me.
well … only thing i can say is … after … pick another solution.

After reading this post, I did a little research and I am freaking out. I have been on it for a yr and a half. I almost immediately had problems with achne. But the other stuff came about gradually and I never really thought about it being related. I have also gained a lot of weight and never thought about that being related. I don’t think I can go off of it though b’c I am not on it for birth control (It’s a long story.) Hmmm. Lots to think about. Thanks.

Oh yeah, certain BCPs have made me totally nuts while others made me sane. When I first went on them in my 20s, my boyfriend at the time told me it “took the mean away” during PMS.
I’ve found anything with norepinephrine or progestin turns me psycho.

I just had my Mirena taken out last month – it hurts WAY less on the way out than it did going in. I promise. I sort of wonder if the Mirena was to blame for some of my “issues,” too (namely, libido = zzzzz…), but I mostly got rid of it because we *are* trying for another baby.
Hope that going Mirena-less is just the fix you need. Good luck.

Wow, I’m a little stunned — not in the way your dad was, however, and that cracked me UP! — because I have had zero problems with mine. I guess it just highlights how different our bodies really are and how something that’s good for one person can be disastrous for someone else.
I would hope people would stop and take a moment to remember that before freaking out over having one!
I hope it goes well and that it’s the change you need. (Hugs)

I also have Mirena and I have had it for about two months. I have not noticed anything specific in the way of side effects. In fact I have not had any spotting, or any periods for that matter. I am breastfeeding so maybe that is what is doing that. On the other hand I have not lost any of the pregnancy weight that I have gained and I have about 40 lbs to go so I don’t know if its the Mirena or the breastfeeding, but good for you for doing what is best for you!! I hope it takes away the crazy!! I would send wine but how about some Baileys??
Anyways Good Luck !

I had mine for nearly 5 years. My period flow did increase slightly and my cramping was a little worse… however, I went 5 years without any other side effect. I only had it removed so we could make a baby. I have already talked to the OB about how soon I can have a new one put in after I deliver.
