My Obsession with Weather.com Continues
Growing up in New York, we watched The Weather Channel constantly. My dad and I were big on watching thunderstorms roll in and so I’d keep an eye on the radar so I’d know what to expect and when. Then we could go sit on the back deck and see it all unfold before our eyes.
Of course, we’d go inside before it got too crazy out. Nothing like being struck by lightening to ruin a good day, right?
Anyway, if you grew up in a part of the country that snows, you know how important knowing the weather forecast is every night before school. Because snow days? Are a precious commodity, and if you know the night ahead that there’s a big storm coming, your night can be filled with dreams of all the fun things you and your friends would be able to do the next day.
And if you’re like me, you’d probably also spend the night jumping out of bed to look out the widow to make sure the forecasters hadn’t given you the wrong forecast AGAIN. Nothing like planning a snowday filled with movies, hot chocolate and glop only to have your dreams dashed when you wake up to find 50+ degree temps and no fucking snow on the ground. Assholes.
Where was I going with all of this? Oh, yes. Weather.com. So living in Southern California, I generally don’t have a great need for the weather forecast. In my area, you can plan on temps ranging from 60-70 degrees with fog in the morning and afternoon sun for 300 days of the year. The other 65 days are either over 70 and sunny or colder and possibly rainy.
It’s the rainy days that get me. I find myself once again obsessively checking weather.com or even turning on The Weather Channel when I can get my kids away from The Wiggles and Dora for a few minutes. I CAN NOT help myself. It’s like a sickness and I should probably seek professional help.
So, now that I’m in New York for the next few days, I’m once again glued to the “weather in motion” radar feature on Weather.com. I might have to just suck it up, buy myself some kickass rain boots and head out in the rain. Because as much as I love watching the weather unfold online, I’d rather get out and get rained on in my favorite city.

My dad is obsessed with The Weather Channel. If my parents ever get divorced, that will be part of the reason why.
I live in Atlanta, home of The Weather Channel. I’m often amazed at how often they get the weather wrong IN Atlanta. I mean, just look out the flippin’ window people!

Funny you should bring this up today. See, it’s snowing like freaking mad here in Denver, and guess what? NO.SNOW.DAY. Parents are about to electronically storm the superintendent’s office. All the other districts around us are closed, our school is open. If *I* think the schools should be closed (and I celebrate every day when my boys walk out the door to school), then it’s bad. I’m laying bets that school gets out at 1 and canceled for tomorrow. If you’re watching the Weather Channel, I’m sure you’ve caught that we’re supposed to get another 18 or so inches by tomorrow night. Grrrr….

Mine is this little weather thing on my Mac. I check it all the time. Today is a snow day here…although I’d of only had one in school anyway. But I keep looking at the little thing hoping it will suddenly say it’s sunny and 65.

Isn’t the Weather Channel selling out and adding weather-related movies to their line-up? I heard something on the radio about it the other day.

growing up we watched the weather channel like regular people watch TV. It just isn’t the same now and I just don’t like it as much. When I turn on the Weather Channel I should not have to worry that I will miss the local on the 8’s for hours on end because they are showing a movie!
Enjoy NYC-I am jealous! And for rain boots, check out payless, I got an adorable pair for less than $10 a month ago, altho it was BOGO and so The Chicken got a pair of boots too!

Your obsession came in quite handy when you informed me of an incoming t-storm here at my house. By the way, can you let me know when this wind is supposed to let up? It’s cramping my style.

As a fellow (or fella?) east coaster I can totally relate. The Weather Channel was a big deal in my house and my Dad, although having relocated to California more than 10 years ago, remains obsessed with the weather. He even has a “weather station” that he keeps in the house that will tell you everything you ever wanted (or didn’t want in the case of those of us who don’t really want to discuss the barometric pressure at 7:30 in the morning) to know about temperature changes, precipitation and much more.
I still love checking the Weather Channel even though I live in San Francisco and let’s face it, not too much changes here.
I so miss the days of tracking storms and guesstimating inches hoping for snow days – well, maybe not that much. It’s much more fun to visit snowy rainy weather then to live in it IMHO.
Enjoy!!

I am also obsessed with weather.com
But then again, I live in Chicago – where tomorrow it’ll be close to 70 degrees and then Sunday it’ll be 45.

The weather channel and I parted ways when I moved to San Diego. Ain’t much happening here and they can’t be trusted on those three days it might rain. Hope NY is a good time.

Whatever you do, don’t get the BerryWeather app on the Blackberry phone! You can store 10 locations in there and look at animated radar maps.

Sad to say you are not the only on obsessed with checking the weather. Except I always am using the weather app on my iphone. If we are going anywhere I check it when I wake up to see how to dress the kids. Then check it when I get out of the shower then check it a couple times while I am drying my hair. Like the weather is going to change that much in such a short amount of time…… yeah I understand your addiction. =-)
