Playing Catch (Up)
T-Ball started for Dylan. It’s like, THE most adorable thing I’ve ever seen.
They practice twice a week for an hour and it’s HILARIOUS. They run in all sorts of directions, they just watch the ball roll by them, they sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” while playing third base. It’s like a variety comedy hour put on by a bunch of five year olds.
Their first game was Saturday. At 8am. Dylan protested at the beginning, but after we started getting him into his uniform, he warmed up to the idea. When he was all gussied up, he thought he was hot shit.
I can’t really blame him. The game was fun. They don’t count outs or keep score, so the kids just got to play and figure out what the hell was going on. With a few bathroom breaks thrown in for good measure.
Zach has decided it’s time to try to use the potty. Except, he only thinks to use the potty after he’s already done his business in his diaper. We need to work on his timing. I am determined to get him potty trained before I have another baby’s diapers to change. A few months off would be nice. Plus, he starts preschool (HOLY CRAP) in August, so we’ve really got to get him out of diapers before that. I need to get myself motivated to really get on the ball.
We moved in with my in-laws a week and a half ago. So far so good. The boys are enjoying their new room and DJ and I are enjoying the non-commute. I need to figure out my routine and the boys need to figure out a new sleep schedule. This whole waking up at 6am when we don’t have to be up until at least 7 is starting to get old That will come eventually, I suppose. Hopefully the time change next weekend will help with that. I am really looking forward to the next few months as the weather improves and we can really enjoy our new surroundings. There is SO much to do in Santa Barbara, I have a feeling we’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors. Bring on the sunscreen!
I’m slowly starting to feel better. Mornings are much improved, I even look forward to having a cup of coffee! Hopefully my evenings will follow suit and I’ll start feeling better at night. I’m really looking forward to enjoying food again. Like, a lot.
My next OB appointment is on the 18th of this month. And my anatomy scan is scheduled for Thursday, April 15th. Dylan is going to come with us, which should be fun. He loves looking at ultrasound pictures, so I think he’ll get a kick of seeing the baby live and on screen. Plus, if it IS a girl, DJ will have another penis present to make him feel better.
I’m only half kidding.
There’s really not too much else to report. I’ve been boring, which is why I haven’t really updated. Hopefully my brain will reload soon so I can actually start posting again. I know you’ll all be thrilled!

Dylan is ADORABLE in his uniform! He’s totally hot shit. My nearly 5 y.o. starts t-ball in a couple of weeks and I CAN’T WAIT. It is going to be awesome – he has no idea what it is all about. He doesn’t understand the concept of playing against another team – and our league doesn’t even do practices at this age so the games are even more likely to be uncontrolled chaos. Awesome – just awesome.
Glad you are all settled in to your temp home – congrats on the baby!

Give me 48 hours with Zach, I will potty train him.
Just kidding. I have no idea how to potty train a child, let alone a BOY child. I just want 48 hours with Zach. And Dylan, for that matter. I want to play catch with him.

What? A time change? Already? NOOOOOOOOOO.
Ha. I adore the first year or two of sports for kids. Before they have any clue what they are supposed to do.
Yay for baby parts. Are you going to share?

Oh my goodness, he is soooo cute. Now you just need a matching uniform for Zach so that my head can explode from all the cuteness.
That baby is going to be a GIRL. I just know it (or anyway, I’m convinced I do!)

Last year, my son’s T-ball practice took place in a field right smack next to a train track. You can imagine how distracting that was to a group of young Thomas worshipers. Every time the whistle sounded, they all froze, then ran to the fence — ball, bat and game abandoned. It was hysterical!

Ahhh, TBall how I miss thee. The adorable outfielders picking their noses while watching planes fly overhead. My daughter sitting down in left field to pick dandylions….It is a great comedy isn’t it?
PS It’s the year of the baby. My dad says its the economy. Last year no one could afford to do anything but …. well you know. My ‘other’ son is now expecting in August and my brother is expecting in July. Add in our RolyPoly arriving in the next month and you and like I said. 2010: The Year of the Baby(ies)

We have never done baseball, but this year The Chicken decided that she wanted to do softball….hold me. I remember the hours we would spend at the field when I was playing baseball. Thankfully the ballpark is only a 3 min drive in the car and a ten minute ride on bike. It should be fun!

Speaking as a preschool teacher who was once in charge of the Potty-Trainer class, I can give some advice here.
Nappies off. Completely. No nappies, no pull-ups (which are actually nappies, regardless of all the crap they spew about them being “just like underwear”). It’s getting to Summer where you are, right? Let Zack run around in a t-shirt and his undies when it gets warmer. It’s less washing for you when he does have an accident. This way, he knows that when he does wee in his pants, it’s unpleasant and wet, he gets an immediate reaction that nappies do not allow children to feel. Also, he’s older than most potty-trainers I’ve worked with (We used to start when they turned 2, or just before depending on parents), and age makes a lot of difference. If he’s able to cognitively understand things like “You’re not wearing a nappy, don’t wee until you get to the toilet”, it starts making all the difference. My friend’s child is completely day-time potty-trained and he only turned 2 three weeks ago. Only wears a nappy at night now. It’s all because his language skills are way advanced, like you get with older kids like Zach.
Good luck!
P.S. I really recommend a star chart if you have any problems at all with potty-training. A star chart is visible proof for a child that they’re working towards a goal. Every time he does his business on the potty or in the toilet, he gets a star or sticker. When he gets a certain number (say 10) he gets a special treat, something that he really likes doing but doesn’t often get. Mark off that point and start again. It’s also a great way to introduce children to the concept of counting objects rather than just rote-counting.
P.P.S Dylan looks so cute in that uniform.
